How We Can Help

We offer support to local pet owners to ensure adopted pets stay in loving homes and to reduce the strain on shelters. We offer some assistance with medical care, pet behavioral issues during stressful times, a free community pet food pantry and work with pet owners to prepare plans for long-term care of animals in case of emergency.

Plan For Your Pets

The best thing you can do for your pet is to identify a friend or family member as your pet’s guardian in an emergency. This ensures that your pet is cared for by someone you know and trust and prevents your pet from entering the shelter.  Having that plan in place tremendously helps the shelter, and can provide reassurance about the care of your pet.

As a standard best practice, the Ulster County SPCA recommends that all pets wear ID tags with contact information and pets are microchipped with up to date contact information. New York State also requires all dogs be licensed with your municipality and wear their license. This will help your community get your pet back to you in the event they go missing and will prevent them from having to enter the shelter.

Re-Homing

The Ulster County SPCA is making every effort to keep as many pets in safe, loving homes as possible. Should the need arise for animals to find new homes, however, we are here to provide emergency shelter and care. Rehoming animals is considered an essential service, to avoid animals being abandoned or becoming homeless. Because shelter capacity is limited, we work closely with pet owners to find safe alternatives to surrendering an animal into their care. Should it become absolutely necessary for you to surrender your pet, please call us Tue-Sun, 11:30 am-3:30 pm, at (845) 331-5377.

Community Pantry

In times of crisis, families can face difficulties caring or providing for a pet. The Ulster County SPCA has a free community pet food pantry to provide pet food and basic supplies.

The community pet food pantry is available during our normal hours, Tue-Sun, 11:30 am-3:30 pm. Please call 331-5377 x210 when arriving in the parking lot and a staff member will ask a few questions, prepare the items you need and bring them out to the front of the building. There is no income verification to use the pantry and there is no cost. We provide a 30 day supply of pet food as it is available.
